The French Mandate in Syria and Lebanon

A workshop organised by the Centre for Lebanese Studies in association with the Middle East Centre at St Antony’s College. The aim of the workshop was to bring together scholars currently working on the topic with established experts who have written on the period. The conference addressed issues such as the National Pact; the nationalism of Emile Edde; the role of Robert de Caix in the establishment of France’s mandatory policy in Syria and Lebanon; the attitudes of French deputies; France’s Islamic; the French mandatory administration; the creation of the Syrian borders during the period of the French mandate; the French High Commissioner in Syria; and imperialism, state-building and the press in Syria.
