DESCRIPTION:Following from our series on education in conflict held over the past two terms where we examined this topic from different perspectives, including ethical scholarship, academic freedom, gender and climate, we are delighted to invite you to our upcoming event which focuses on the perspectives of persons with disabilities in the context of war and occupation. This event is organised in collaboration with the Research for Equitable Access and Learning (REAL) Centre and the Cambridge Network for Disability and Education Research (CaNDER) at the University of Cambridge, and Disability Under Siege.\nVoices from Palestine: the lives of people with disabilities under occupation and war\nThursday 11 June 2024 – Online\n5:00- 6:30pm Lebanon\n3:00 to 4:30pm UK\n7:00- 8:30am Vancouver\nPlease register in advance for this webinar here\nAccessibility: British Sign Language interpreter, Arabic Sign Language interpreter, live close- captioning.\nSpoken Language: Speakers in English, video in Arabic with English subtitles.\nTranslation from English to Arabic available.\nThe webinar aims to shed light on the living conditions and challenges faced by people with disabilities in Palestine under occupation and amidst war conflicts. It will also delve into the concept of deinstitutionalisation of people with disabilities, discussing current projects and initiatives in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Through the voices of researchers, academics, and disability activists, the event will provide insights into the current situation of institutions and the destruction faced by many, along with testimonies from people directly impacted by displacement and conflict. This webinar will serve as a platform for dialogue, education, and advocacy surrounding disability rights in Palestine.\nSpeakers\nShireen is a journalist and disability activist from the Gaza Strip.\nSuzan Mitwalli is an academic researcher at the Institute of Community and Public Health of Birzeit University. Her main research interests are mental health and disability. She has worked for many years on disability intervention research and currently focuses on participatory action research.\nShatha Abu Srour is a Researcher at the Institute of Community and Public Health of Birzeit University and disability activist.\nProfessor Jasbir Puar is Professor and Graduate Director of Women’s and Gender Studies at Rutgers University. Author of the The Right to Maim: Debility, Capacity, Disability.\nDr. Itab Shuayb is an academic and senior researcher in inclusive design and disability specialist at the Centre for Lebanese Studies. She is currently a visiting scholar at the Engineering Department- Inclusive Design Group- University of Cambridge.\n
