Learning to Resist: A National Back-to-School Conference on Palestine for UK Teachers
Saturday, 14 September
10:00-16:00 UK time, Online
This past year, few issues were as consequential for British schools as the genocide in Palestine. Across the country, students and teachers rose up in solidarity with Palestinians, demanding an end to Israel’s war in Gaza. In response, educators and young people faced silencing and pushback from officials. This included unlawful disciplinary measures and purposefully ambiguous government guidance meant to stomp out dissent. The result exposed deep connections between the fight to protect basic rights in the UK and the broader struggle for freedom in Palestine and beyond.
Learning to Resist is a national back-to-school conference for UK teachers meant to address these issues. Our aim is to ask: how can we both learn from and stand up for Palestine in our schools? To answer this question, the event will bring together diverse experts–including students, grassroots activists, scholars and lawyers–to address the genocide in Palestine and its implications for British schools. This includes a keynote panel featuring leading Palestinian educators, as well as participatory workshops on topics like teaching Palestine, protecting free speech, and approaching anti-racism as an intersectional struggle.
The conference is a collaboration between the Centre for Lebanese Studies and the community organisation Maslaha. Additional details, including a full program of events, will be made available soon.
