Education Monitor

About

The Education Monitor is a vital initiative conducted by a dedicated team of experts and researchers at the Centre for Lebanese Studies. Ever since the onset of the crisis in Lebanon, we have been gathering data about the educational sector through regular surveys, in-depth research, and detailed analysis. Our team engages with a diverse group of stakeholders, including students, parents, teachers, and policymakers, to gain a holistic view of the challenges and opportunities within Lebanon’s educational landscape.

The initiative aims to provide timely and actionable insights that inform educational policy and practice. By continuously monitoring the situation, we are able to offer evidence-based policy suggestions and innovative solutions designed to address the specific needs of this vital sector. Our commitment is to ensure that the insights gained through our research lead to meaningful improvements in the education system, thereby supporting the academic and personal growth of students across Lebanon.

In response to the compounding crises faced by Lebanon since 2019—including economic turmoil, social unrest, and the COVID-19 pandemic—the Centre for Lebanese Studies established its Education Monitor. This initiative aims to analyse and monitor the impact of these crises on Lebanon’s educational sector.

Over the past four years, we have conducted a range of studies assessing how these crises affect student learning, parents’ ability to afford schooling costs, the challenges faced by teachers due to economic instability, migration of students between the public and private sectors, school dropout, and the accumulation of learning losses and their impact on children’s schooling outcomes. Our research, which includes annual surveys and assessments involving students, parents, and educators, identifies key obstacles encountered at the start of each academic year both in the private and the public sectors.

Our studies cover both public and private schools across Lebanon’s eight governorates. A central goal of the Education Monitor is to advance equity and equality in education for all children in Lebanon, irrespective of nationality, gender, disability, race, age, or region.

Following the release of each report, a national consultation is held with policymakers, teachers, unions, Member of Parliament, and academics to discuss findings and develop strategies to address identified gaps. This programme seeks to offers a comprehensive understanding of the complex challenges facing Lebanon’s education sector during ongoing crises, providing evidence-based insights for policy formulation and reform efforts.
